Concept Analysis of Nursing Ethical Dilemma


Abstract
The concept of ethical dilemma is important issues to nurses employed in health care system.
A concept analysis of nursing ethical dilemma allows us to examine the attributes of the concept and to distinguish between the defining characteristics of the concept and the irrelevant attributes by analyzing the word and its use. The concept of ethical dilemma was based on ethics, a part of the philosophy.
In this concept analysis, the technique advocated by Walker and Advant (1983) was used, practical dilemma cases were described by 27 nurses in general hospital.
The purposes of this analysis were to clarify the meaning of an ambiguous concpet, to develop a precise operational definition, to reflect theoretical base of nursing ethical dilemma, and to encourage communication and promote understanding among nurses about it under discussion.
The operational definition of nursing ethical dilemma was nursing situation involving decision making chosen among the difficult problems seemingly incapable of a satisfactory solution or among two or more equally unsatisfactory alternatives.
Results of this analysis were as follows:
Nurses perceived ethical dilemma among the patient, professional nursing, other medical personnel, and administrative institution. And it was to be hypothesized that perceived degree of ethical dilemma was different according to education of nursing ethics, educational level, positional status, religion, ethical value and belief, degree of moral development, and working situation.
Therefore, we suggest a need for further broaden researches studying ethical dilemma in various nursing situation, how nurses to cope with legal-ethical dilemma, what the reasoning process and ethical ¢¥ principles in decision making are. And, in order to protect autonomy of nurse and patient¢¥s right, we suggest a need for research approaching nursing diagnosis.
